International year of Astronomy in Serbia
The International Year of Astronomy 2009 (IYA2009) is a global celebration of astronomy and its contributions to society and culture and marks the 400th anniversary of the first use of an astronomical telescope by Galileo Galilei. The aim of the Year is to stimulate worldwide interest, especially among young people, in astronomy and science under the central theme "The Universe, Yours to Discover". IYA2009 events and activities will promote a greater appreciation of the inspirational aspects of astronomy that embody an invaluable shared resource for all nations. The IYA2009 activities are taking place at global and regional levels, and especially at the national and local levels. National Nodes in each country are running activities throughout the year, aimed at establishing collaborations between professional and amateur astronomers, science centres, educators, and science communicators.

The Serbian Astronomical Society (SAS), in Serbian - Društvo astronoma Srbije (DAS), was founded in 1981. The seat of the SAS is in Belgrade. Before its foundation astronomers of Serbia were organized within the Society of mathematicians and physicists of Serbia (since its foundation in 1948) and by this Society within the Union of Societies of mathematicians and physicists (since its foundation in 1949). Both organization incorporated the astronomers officially in its title, in 1962 and 1966, respectively.
